Anecdotes only go so far, but I'd love to share my story in case it benefits other readers of this article! Note that I also have a PhD in molecular biology and I'm probably more tuned into my health than average. I have a history of cardiometabolic issues on both sides of my family, especially in the men. I've been fighting to break this cycle since I lost my grandmother in 2013, believing that my lifestyle choices would do the trick. I get at least 45 mins of exercise (everything from heavy lifting to Zone 1 cardio) 5-7 days per week, eat a fiber and omega-3 rich diet, and sleep great. My high LDL and triglycerides started to show at age 41 and I continued trying to fight it without statins for 2 years, adding a fish oil supplement, metamucil, and extra cardio to my routine. There was absolutely nothing I could do to beat my genetics (and perimenopause on top of it). I finally started a very low dose of rosuvastatin in the past couple weeks. So far, so good. If I develop side effects, we'll revisit the plan. My CT calcium score results were 0s across the board, so we have time to work it out. Be proactive and don't delude yourself into thinking that you have total control!
